How to Access Emergency Contacts on a Locked iPhone and How to Set Them Up

Imagine this: you’re walking down the street and you come upon an unconscious person lying on the side walk. Your first call should be to 911. But then, wouldn’t it be nice if you could also call the person’s emergency contact to let them know the situation? If that person has an iPhone, you may be able to do so, but first, you will need to know how to access emergency contacts on a locked iPhone. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to find emergency contact information on a locked iPhone. Plus we’ll walk you through how to set up your own iPhone emergency contacts.

Utilizing iPhone’s Emergency SOS Feature

When your iPhone is locked, you can access the Emergency SOS feature by quickly pressing the power button (side button) five times in rapid succession. This action will bring up the Emergency SOS slider on your screen. Alternatively, you can simultaneously press and hold the power button and one of the volume buttons.

Finding Medical Information and Emergency Contacts on iPhone

Next, you’ll see an option that reads “Medical ID”. Tap and slide the asterisk icon to the right to access the Medical ID card. This card contains important medical information and emergency contacts that they’ve (hopefully!) set up in the Health app. From this screen, you can call their emergency contacts, even if the phone is locked.

Add Emergency Contacts to Your iPhone

Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to access someone’s emergency contact info if needed, let’s walk through how to set this up on your phone. We have two ways to do this:

  1. The first way is through Settings > Emergency SOS. Scroll to the bottom, then tap Edit Emergency Contacts in Health. Tap Edit in the top right to add medical conditions, medications, allergies, and more. Here you can also add Emergency Contacts. While on this screen, be sure that “Show When Locked” is enabled. Tap Done to save your changes.
  2. The second way is to launch the Health app, tap your profile image in the top right, then select Medical ID. From there, follow the steps above.

In moments of crisis, accessing someone’s emergency contacts swiftly can be a crucial step toward ensuring their safety. Thanks to Apple’s Emergency SOS feature, you can access emergency contacts on a locked iPhone. By following the simple steps outlined in this article, you can ensure that your loved ones are notified promptly if you find yourself in an emergency situation. Remember, it’s always better to be prepared for the unexpected – and your locked iPhone can be an ally in this regard.
